Raised in Bronx, NY, by his single mother who had moved there from Puerto Rico, Dr. Ayala accompanied his mother to doctors’ appointments when she was diagnosed with lupus since her English was not very good and he needed to translate for her. It was then that he became inspired by the doctors’ ability to make a difference in people’s lives. From that point on, Ayala knew he wanted to go into medicine. His mother instilled in him the desire and strength to achieve his dreams despite growing up in a time when Bronx was experiencing severe urban decay. It was that environment that motivated Dr. Ayala to make something of himself and build a remarkable career despite his humble beginnings and the tremendous adversity he had to overcome. Dr. Ayala has authored a USMLE Board Review Book Series for Medical Students and Residents and received a Letter of Appreciation from President of United States for distinguished service to the United States, among others. He is the first Harvard-trained otolaryngologist and the first Beverly Hills trained Facial Plastic Surgeon in the Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Ayala is also the only ENT Surgeon in the Valley that has served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years and has performed surgery on our troops and coalition forces during the Afghanistan War in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
